It's the second time this year that we are on this hike. We did it this time with a bit of a difference. Not using the 'gold road', but rather on Albie's (the manager) suggestion, went up the mountain to the right and over the shoulder to meet the road again at the cottage that Johannes van der Merwe had built for his daughter. This takes one over a shoulder with ancient ruins and past a view point with a great vista over the Vaal river.
An interesting sighting in one of the old mine entrances was a Rhombic Night Adder. From her bumpy shape we concluded that she had consumed a number of bats and was still digesting them. The mine entrances we passed, by the way, are exploration digs, they only penetrate into the mountain a certain distance and never delivered any gold.
Lunch we had in the cottage which we wanted to inspect and found it open. It was decided then that we should book this cottage for a relaxing weekend.
